Within a 20 mile radius of East Midlands airport are the major cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham.
The airport is situated next to a first class motorway network just off the M1 and M42 motorways, making the travel from anywhere in the Midlands a very easy task. Despite the recession East Midlands airport saw passenger numbers increase in 2008 which was against falls seen at all other major airports, Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester and Stansted airports all suffered reductions in passenger levels, whilst East Midlands increased passenger numbers by 3.8% in 2008 reaching 5.6 million and is now the 10th busiest airport in the UK.
In 2004 East Midlands airport was renamed Nottingham East Midlands despite being in the county of Leicester, to increase international awareness on the back of Nottingham Forest winners of the European cup, because it was considered that outside of the UK East Midlands meant very little to the international traveler “Nottingham” was added to give the airport a sense of geographical position. Due to public and media pressure the airport went back to being called East Midlands airport following constant challenges from the cities of Derby and Leicester the airport.
